The South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB) is a registered non-profit organisation, striving to meet the needs of all blind and partially sighted people in South Africa. Founded in 1929, the SANCB’s provision of support includes community based rehabilitation, social and economic development support for blind persons through groups at community level, education and training, the provision of assistive devices, prevention of blindness and the restoration of sight through cataract operations. The organization consists of highly specialized departments, whose work are run as long-term projects, since they address real needs that have been identified. The organisation works throughout South Africa with its membership of over 105 organizations.
The South African National Council for the Blind recognizes the right of persons with disabilities to work, on an equal basis with others; this includes the right to the opportunity to gain a living by work freely chosen or accepted in a labour market and work environment that is open, inclusive and accessible to persons with disabilities as highlighted in article 27 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.
With the alarming statistic of 97% of disable people being unemployed in South Africa, government’s failure to meet its agreed quota of 2% employment of disable persons and the high level of ignorance on disability and the many enabling mechanisms available to accommodate persons living with disabilities- the need for more placement partners that serve as human resource pools would accelerate employment and raise awareness on the capabilities of persons with disabilities into the formal labour market. SANCB matches skilled workers with clients, saving businesses time and money, while providing for its employees with honesty and honour. This requires a high level of communication. It means asking open-ended questions and listening. This means knowing the local market so SANCB can really serve each client and employee, not just "sell" them as goods. We provide quality service.
